Mount Chachani
About Mount Chachani
This mountain reaches a summit hieght of 6075 meters, and it is one of the easiest 6000 meter peaks in the world to climb from a technical point of view. Glacier crossing is involved so hikers will need bring proper equipment (pick-axe, crampons, climbing rope, etc). From the top there is an excellent view of Arequipa down below, as well as El Misti to the east.

Getting there:
This mountain is located just north of Arequipa. There are different routes up the mountain with different starting points, all of which require hiring a 4WD vehicle to get to. The nearest from accesspoints from arequipa lead to routes that take 3 days to complete. Approaching the mountain from the Campamento de Azurfrera at 4950 meters (1.5 hour drive from Arequipa) allows hikers to summit and return within 1-2 days (if very well acclimatised).

Jan 17, 2008 This was my first climb above 6000 meters and it was pretty awesome. I took the eastern route from Campamento - this involved crossing a glacier (also my first time). The trek was a lot of fun partially because my guide was a bit crazy (he introduced me to his very own brew of coffee-cola made by putting coffee in hot coke rather than water). Unfortunately, both of us fell asleep at the top and woke up feeling seriously sick from the lack of oxygen up there (I strongly recommend not falling asleep up there). The climb down was pretty horrible due to the nausea. I also recommend travelers inspect the vehicles being supplied - a wheel came off ours on the way back down to Arequipa on what is probably the most dangerous road I've ever been on (think road-runner). Jul 19, 2012 Arequipa is amazing region. You need 3-4 days minimum at this area to see major points of interest. Kolca canyon is the place you must be Related Links
