This volcanic mountain reaches a peak elevation of 5825 meters above sea level. Despite it's height, it is technically a very easy climb, though it can be fairly grueling. The mountain is snowcapped and reaching the top requires the use of crampons and a pick-ax. At the summit, there is a small crater with fumaroles venting volcanic gases. There is also a large 10-meter cross made of iron.
Warning: trekkers have been known to be robbed on several of the routes up El Misto, so it is recommended that visitors hire a guide or join a tour. Most trekking tours up El Misti are 3-day excursions. Payment Accepted:
Getting there:
This mountain is located several kilometers northeast of Arequipa. As there are several different routes up this mountain, there are several different starting points. There isn't much in the way of public transport and visitors will likely need to hire a 4WD vehicle (cost of roughly 40 USD for the frontside of the mountain starting at 3300 meters in elevation and between 120-150 USD for the backside of the mountain starting at about 4000 meters in elevation).
