It is now believed that the Cotahuasi Canyon may the deepest in the world (it had been previously claimed that the Colca Canyon was the deepest but the current opinion is that Cotahuasi is deeper). Parts of the canyon are 3500-4000 meters deep (scientific measurements of the area have not been done here yet). There are several hiking trails in the canyon, some of which lead to hot springs and waterfalls. The canyon is quite rural, and receives very few travelers.

Getting there:
This canyon is located in the northwestern end of Arequipa region, about 400 km from Arequipa city by road. The small town of Cotahuasi is the main access-point to the canyon. About half of the road to Cotahuasi from Arequipa is unpaved and it takes about 12 hours to travel by bus between the two town. The buses pack to Arequipa only leave in the late afternoon (usually between 4:30pm and 5:00pm).
