Water dam in Czorsztyn known also as "Gabriel Narutowicz's water dam" is (next to the Czorsztyn Castle ruins) a landmark of this small but lovely town in Southern Poland. Though for some of the adventurers and travelers out there water dam is a thing that is hardly impressive as such, the history of the dam itself and its intimate character is somewhat more interesting. The first projects of damming up the Lake of Czorsztyn date back to year 1905. However, it was only until year 1976 that the construction works started and the dam has been finaly completed in 1997. Throughout the period between 1905 - 1976 only research and preparatory works have been performed. The Gabriel Narutowicz's dam is also working as a water powerplant (90 MWs). Besides the production of electricity, it also had a tremendous influence on averting or minimizing the damages and threats connected with the massive floods that hit the whole Poland in July 1997, saving several villages and towns from literally drowning during the flood in the troubled waters of Dunajec river. What I like most about the dam is a breath-taking panorama that can be seen from the top of it (the dam is accessible for the tourists, free of charge, at least it was when I was there last time). The view of sun-bathed mountains, blue string of Dunajec river 50 meters below you and the ruins of the Czorsztyn Castle behind your back is a picture you won't forget! Especially when you are on the dam in the center of the show!
