Sep 22, 2008 I made the mistake of going to Warsaw after Krakow, which I do not recommend. If you are going to both cities be sure to go to Warsaw first because Krakow's Old Town will spoil you for the rebuilt Old Town in Warsaw. Warsaw's Old Town is pretty, lively and full of restaurants but doesn't have the rich flavor of Krakow. There wasn't a lot to do her either, I saw the sights and then went to the shopping mall to take advantage of the stronger dollar in Poland. If you are going to be shopping for souviners and/or tee shirts and will be traveing onwards to Krakow, then wait until Krakow because the prices are lower there for these types of items, but if you are looking for European type clothing the mall is the place to go when you are in Warsaw. I must also say that on arrival to the city, the train station was scary as I arrived at a little over midnight to a shocking exhibition of crowd mentality. When the train pulled in the platform it was full of very aggressive people pushing to get on the train. I had to use my suitcase to fend off the surge of people and I saw an older woman knocked down on the steps of the train by the crowd pushing behind her. The push continued despite the woman having fallen...all to get a compartment for the overnight train. It was an unnerving way to arrive in a city, and actually, I have never encountered a situation like this at a train station in Europe before. After the train left the station was very, very deserted and I apprehensivly made my way through the deserted underpass tunnel that lead to the main part of the station. Along the way I did see 2 uniformed and armed police patrolling the tunnel which helped me to feel a little safer. I emerged upwards by stairs to thankfully find a taxi waiting at a stand. I settled with the driver for a set price to the hotel before climbing in to the cab (highly recommended or you may have shock at the rate once you arrive at your destination) and made my way to my hotel. Later when i was leaving the city the train station was fine, I arrived in the daytime and it was full of people and felt quite safe. I don't think that I would go back to Warsaw again, it was an interesting city to see, but not one that calls me back again. Aug 22, 2011 When I was younger (in late 1950s, half a century ago) I used to joke the quality of material used for reconstruction made the Old Town look truly medieval... That doesn't change but its' impressive nevertheless. A warning: don't eat there unless you like tourist food. There are exceptions as Fukier but even they become more and more tourist oriented. Apr 27, 2011 A really beautiful place to visit in Warsaw. It has such a tragic history behind it however the Old Town itself is just mind-blowing. The fact that it was rebuilt from the ashes of World War II just has to be emotionally moving, even to the most cold-hearted person. Apr 27, 2011 Rebuilt from the ashes of WWII in which 90% of it had been reduced to rubble the restoration of Warsaw's Stare Miaso is quite an achievement. Should you find yourself in the Polish captial it's well worth visiting.
