The tower is all that is left of the original palace and surrounding castle Dom Dinis builded in honour of his wife. After her dead the castle was used as a ammunition dump. A explosion in the late 17th century destroyed the whole castle with the exception of the tower. In the 18th century the palace got restored. Now it is a pousada, an up-class hotel. The tower and some other parts of the palace are open to visitors

Great contrast between the old worn down tower and the stark white palace/pousada. Brilliant views from the top of the tower. But be careful climbing it because some parts are a bit dangerous and dark.
