Dating from the Late Bronze Age this place became a prosporous city under the Romans who settled here in the 1st century AD. In the time of barbarian invasion the city shrank and a huge devensive wall was build around the city. The Suevi seized the town in 468AD. A century after the assaults Conimbriga was still the seat of the bishop. Therefore the abandonment was slow. The ruins survived and alongside them rose the village of Condeixa-a-Velha

Getting there:

The site lies 16 km from Coimbra, first take the N1 to Condeixa-a-Nova and then turn to the National Road n.342 and then just follow the sign-posts with the indication "Conimbriga".

By public transport take the bus across the Coimbra trainstation. There are two buses in the morning going directly to the site and two in the afternoon from the site to Coimbra. You can also take a bus to Condeixa-a-Nova then it is another1,5-2km walk to the south.

As an archaeologist I must say this place is a dream. The largest Roman settlement in Portugal is definititly worth a visit. I would recommend to visit the museum first, it gives a really clear picture of urban life in roman times. They also have some really nice artefacts there that they excavated there. The ruins are really impressive. But you can't walk just everywhere, they protect the weaker spots like the many beautiful mosiacs. Still you can see everything. There is a leaflet in different languages you can get at the entrance take it with you because even though the leaflet doesn't really have any extra information in it, it has a good map of the ruins. This way you'll always know what you're staring at. The big defensive wall destroyed a few houses and cuts right through the site but with some of the houses it is still very easy to recognize the different parts. The forum is a bit bare though. Excavations are still ongoing and you might see some students from the nearby university of Coimbra or international students trowel away on your visit.
