About Leiria Castle
This castle standing on top of a rock overlooking Leiria was taken from the Moors by Dom Afonso Henriques in 1135. Inside the present castle you can visit the donjons and the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Pena, a gothic church built by Dom João I. There are also the remains of the ancient Bishop's Palace and a new royal Palace offering great views over the city

Very big castle grounds and impressive walls, the view from the new Royal Palace is just impressive. Loved the gothic ruins of the church. Nice place to walk around, not too many tourist about. There is suppossed to be a museum in the donjon but that was closed when I was there.
