Arecibo Observatory
About Arecibo Observatory
The Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico is the world’s largest radio telescope. The dimensions of the dish are staggering – 305 meters in diameter, covering about 20 acres of area, and made of 38,778 aluminum panels. As well, the receiver and transmission equipment is suspended 450 ft. above the dish and weighs about 900 tons. This 1963 observatory is primarily used for listening to the sounds of the universe and looking for alien life, with atmospheric studies and radar astronomy (where it beams out a 1 million watt signal and collects the echoes) taking up lesser amounts of its time.
At the visiting center, you can see a variety of audiovisual displays and interactive exhibits that will inform you about areas such as astronomy, atmospheric science and the operation and research for the radio telescope. The journey to the observatory is very interesting too - an up and down journey on narrow roads through the tall hills. Payment Accepted:
