The El Yunque National Forest (formerly known as Caribbean National Forest) covers over 28,000 acres of land (113 sq. km) on Puerto Rico and is known as the only tropical rainforest in the US Commonwealth.  El Yunque (meaning Forest of Clouds) is named after the main mountain in the forest, which rises over 3,500 feet above sea level.  El Yunque is cool, healthy and lush (due to the 6,000 mm of rainfall each year) and contains a bounty of ancient trees and diverse plant and animal life, including over 240 species of plants and trees, and the endangered Puerto Rico Amazon Parrot.  From the forest there are some great views of the surrounding oceans and landscape, and the hiking is excellent.   The rainfall also contributes to a number of excellent waterfalls.

By the time you reach the top it's at least 10 - 15 degrees cooler than at the base. You can hear the icy water flowing thru unseen creeks and down the mountainside. Park your car at the top before it gets dark and you can walk up to higher elevations. In one spot well known to residents clear, clean and pure icy water can be collected in your cup of jug. We were especially adventerous and climb over slippery rocks into a crevice with friend's kids.

There is nowhere like it on the island-one of the Carribbean's national treasures. Dress in layers, hiking shoes with gripping soles are best, and make sure to bring binoculars!

If you like nature and like to be in the woods, walk for a long time, swime under the waterfall then it is your place to see.
