Peles Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. It was buit for Carol I, king of Romania. The construction started in 1872 and finished over 10 years later. There were between 300 and 400 workers of all nationalities working every day, speaking their languages like in a Babel Tower. During the communism time , the castle was a museum, open to the public. Because Ceausescu, the Romanian communist leader closed it after 1975, some of the museographers, working there, told him the castle is infested with a fungus and in this way they stopped him to use the castle as a residence or in other purposes and distroy it.Thre are over 150 rooms ( but you cant visit all), some with themes, all lavishly furnished and beautiful decorated. You can see there one of the finest art colection from East and Central Europe. There is another castle in the same park, smaller, but also very beautiful, called Pelisor. It was built for Ferdinand I, the nephew and succesor of king Carol I. Queen Maria, Ferdinand's wife, participated in its decoration, including as a painter. Both castles can be visited during the week, excepting on Mondays. There are guides there, speaking English, French, German, Italian, etc. And after visit you can eat at one of the restaurants near by.

For me this castel is marvelous both inside as outside. It is sorounded by nature, the facade is decorated mostly by drawings as well as wood. Not only is the interior made of beautiful woodwork as well as stain glasses, but also one can see insde a fine colletion of paintings, rugs, china, armors, weapons, and even see that it had a central heating system. Moreover it is one of the first castles in Europe to have had an elevator meaning that they already had electricity and this is a castle that was built between the late 1800 and finished in the begining of the 1900. I visited this castle many times when I lived in Romania in the 90's and if then it was well taken care off and it impressed me, I can only imagine that today is even more beautiful and better. In my opinion it is a most see if you are in the area!!

Taken by itself, it is not the most stunning castle you will find in Europe. However, if you combine the mountainous surroundings and the country in which it is located, it stands as evidence of how great the old monarchies once were.
