Town Square
This square is the most famous city square in all of Russia.  It is situated between the Kremlin (the former royal citadel and currently the official residence of the President of Russia), and Kitay-gorod (a historic merchant quarter), and is dominated by St Basil's Cathedral.

History: Red Square began life as a slum, a shanty town of wooden huts clustered beneath the Kremlin walls that housed a collection of peddlers, criminals and drunks whose status left them outside the official boundaries of the medieval city. It was cleared on the orders of Ivan III at the end of the 1400's, but remained the province of the mob, the site of public executions, and rabble rousing, until much later.

The square's name has nothing to do with communism or with the color of many of its buildings. In fact it derives from the word 'krasnyi', which once meant 'beautiful', and has only come to mean 'red' in contemporary Russian. The name became official in the middle of the 17th century - previously it had been Trinity Square, due to the Trinity Cathedral, the predecessor of St. Basil's. Popularly, it was also known as 'Fire Square', reflecting the number of times medieval Moscow burned. During the Mongol and Tartar invasions, it was the site of fierce fighting, and right up until the end of the 17th century cannon stood ready to defend the square.

You'll be mesmerized when you see it. You won't believe your eyes . You may think that your are in a fairy world.
Besides, its architecture and colors you'll be struck by its big size.
St. Basil's Cathedral was built during the reign of Ivan the Terrible. This church is unique because Ivan ordered to blinden the architect when he accomplished it in order to not design a similar one.
You can also see Lenin's Tomb.
While in Moscow, take warm clothes even is summer. Even though it was August, I shivered and I even felt that my ears were going to fall.

One of my most visited places in Moscow!!! I just loved it over there with the coloured onion domes of Saint Basil's Cathedral in the background on one side with the GUM store and Lenin's Mausoleum facing each other with the Kremlin walls standing behind it and the goose stepping soldiers marching away at short intervals it was a sight to remember and cherish all my life!!! And enjoying the different varieties of ice-cream in the snow was the best joy of all!!! The Red Square truly lives up to it's name (Red Royal) of being the best place in Moscow to be in.

Red Square is something to behold. I could imagine going to (or putting on!) a concert there. The power of being right there next to the Kremlin and with Lenin's tomb on the long side of the square and St. Basil's Cathedral at one end, it's a lot to take in. The red brick of the Kremlin walls are impressive and the red stars at night make you think about how far gone communism is not from this place.
