It was the winter residence of all the Tsars. It's the best museum in the world. Moreover, it has fabulous gardens, statues and jet of waters.
It includes works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rafael, Rembrandt, Van Gogh... You'll never see tremendous treasures gathered at the same place. It's a feast to the sight and you need more than a day to go around it.

Amazing place to see, but one that you should dedicate a full day or more to seeing all of it. Hire a tour guide (expensive but worth it). The history of this palace, and of St. Petersburg itself, is one of the main reasons to go. With a guide you will not only get to see all of the attractions, you will understand their history, which to me is equally if not more fascinating.

The dirtiest toilets i have ever seen and smelled in my whole life, and no one cared! A real shame, because the palace is splendid!

It has great jewels and other artifacts. You can spend the whole day and not finish looking at the amazing things.
