Cultural Museum
The Vepsian Ethnographic Museum is located in Sheltozero in the Vepsian Autonomous Volost of the Republic of Karelia in Russia.  Sheltozero (Шёлтозеро in Russian) is also known as Šoutjärv' in the local Vepsian language.  The Vepsians, or Veps, are the original inhabitants of the area.  They are culturally and linguistically related to the Finns, the Karelians and the Estonians, among others, and all belong to the cultural linguistic group of the Balto-Finns.  They speak a Uralic language, completely distinct from the Indo-European Russian language.  The museum is located in a beautiful old wooden farmhouse and houses a collection of Vepsian artifacts.  A number of handicrafts made by local Vepsian artisans may be purchased here.

For what it is, it is phenomenal that this group has its own museum! I was most disappointed to find a general lack of the Vepsian language on all of the informational cards explaining the history and use of the Vepsian artifacts on display. It was largely a Russian-language only museum.
