Feb 15, 2009 The romantic, turreted Bojnice Castle is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Slovakia. Rising high above the town, it was originally built in the 12th century. In the middle of the 16th century it was converted into a comfortable Renaissance residence, and in the 19th century its last owner, Count Jan Palffy (rumor has it, he still walks around the castle in the middle of the night...), remodelled it into a stately residence resembling the Gothic castles of France's Loire valley. The best time to visit the castle is late April - early May, when there's Festival of ghosts and spirits held in the castle, with lots of banquets, firework displays, theatrical performances and fun for the whole family. Mar 4, 2009 It's the castle that fairy tales are inspired by. Complete with dungeon and a moat. There's a market surrounding the castle and folks in period costume. It's a great experience not to be missed. The prettiest and probably most well kept castle in Slovakia.
