Aug 1, 2009 Strbske Pleso, Slovakia, is the highest inhabited settlement in the highest mountain range of Eastern Europe; The High Tatras, belong to the Carpathian mountain range and reaches 2600 m above sea level. The Alps is the next nearest mountain range which is higher. Along the southern rim of the Vysoke Tatry you have several small villages where people earn most of their income from tourism: Nova and Tatranska Polianka, Sibir, Stary, Novy, Horny and Dolny Smokovec, Tatranska Lesna, Tatranska Lomnica... All of them are at ca. 1000 m, except for Strbske Pleso at around 1350 m. As the moutains have National Park status, there will never be any settlements higher up. Strbske Pleso is therefore a unique starting place for hikes into the most beautiful mountains of Eastern Europe. The 'Pleso' (meaning 'Mountain Lake') is surrounded by plush, unspoilt, natural beauty and dense forestry. This has to be one of my personal favourite spots for a bit a peace, relaxation and quiet (and a beer of course).
