Jan 29, 2009 The Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia, which has been established as a result of quality work of numerous generations of Slovenian coal-miners, is a joint venture of the Velenje Coal Mine (the most state of the art and the largest coal mine in Slovenia with the annual production of 4 million tons of lignite), Velenje City Council and Velenje Museum. While the Coal Mining Museum is managed by the Velenje Coal Mine, it was designed by the Velenje Museum experts who also look after the exhibits, ensuring their preservation for the generations to come. The Museum is here to tell the story of the coal mining in Slovenia and bring it close to a wide audience irrespective of barriers like age, physical disabilities, language or any other limitations. To this effect, it is important to develop and implement an education programme involving all visitors of museum collections, and also for our Museum to enrich the cultural and tourist image of the Šaleška dolina valley as well as Slovenia. The Museum is a means of preserving old miners' values – like camaraderie, solidarity and helping each other –, which is how we treat our visitors and business partners, while the miners' greeting “GOOD LUCK” is a sincere wish for the future of every one of us.
