Robben Island is an island located off the coast of Cape Town that was a prison until the late 20th century. It's most famous inmate was Nelson Mandela who spend nearly 20 years there. In a way similar to Alcatraz except it housed 'political' prisioners during apartheid. It is a MUST for any visit to Cape Town to learn about the history of this interesting place. You travel to the island by catermaran taking about 15 mins, the cost of the boat ride is included in the ticket price. Then you are taken around the island by bus before doing a walking tour of the actual prision. TIP - Call ahead to book your slot as you will probably miss out if you wait till you get there, especially during the summer peak. Also make sure you have a local phone number to give at the time of booking e.g. hotel phone number etc as the boat crossing can be subject to weather and they will call if you departure has to be cancelled.

Robbeneiland to the indigenous settlers, it sits 7km off the coast. from the 17th to 20th centuries it was used to incarcerate prisoners, the most famous of whcih is debatably Nelson Mandela. Today it stands as a celebration of the struggle and a symbol of the finest qualities of the human spirit.

If you haven't booked it ahead, book it on your first day. It sells out quickly.
Near the waterfront is the departures, this is where they sell tickets. This is also a great place to browse the other excursion options they have available. I did a couple other ones and had a great time.

This is not sightseeing, it's an experience not to be missed. Get inside the bleakness of Madiba's life there - well worth it for a glimpse into the wonder that is Nelson Mandela! Also the best views of Table Mountain!!!!

I must see for every visitor to Cape Town. Take the ferry from the V&A Waterfront to Robben Island and experience the place where Nelson Mandela spend a lot of years - and feel history for yourself.
