This is like no other place I have ever seen in the world. The poor are so poor, and the shanty homes are really an eye-opening experience. Our guide told us that most South Africans find it strange that a couple often live in a house that would normally hold 10-20 people in South Africa. The shanty homes we saw had no running water, electricity and held about 7 people (in the space if a small living room in a middle class American home).

Take a guided tour of Soweto and the musuems dealing with the end of apartheid. Truly moving.
