La Cartuja
About La Cartuja
Founded in 1399 on the site where there had been an apparition of the Virgin in some pottery workshops installed here during the Almohad era, the monastry of Santa Maria de las cuevas was expaneded by the Carthusians in the 15th and 16th centuries with donations from Seville's leading families. This was where Columbus lodged on his visits to Seville, where he planned his seecond voyage tot the New World, and where he was buried for a few years. The core of the monastry had some 18th century Baroque additions and was made headquarters of the french during the Napoleonic occupation of 1810-12, when monks where driven out and fled to Portugal.. After Disentailment in 1836, it was purchased by Liverpudlian, Charles Pickman, and turned into a ceramics factory., which it remained until 1982. The whole complex was restored for the 1992 Expo. It now holds the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in a separate building from the monastry complex.

Jul 31, 2009 Strange place, the mix between the old and the new isn´t always succesfull but there are some really nice hidden corners in the monastery that make it worth the trip from down town. Don´t expect a beautiful historical site though, Not a lot of explanation either and there is no good map of the site. Tickets are at the entrance and they are valid for both the monastery and the modern art museum which holds temporary exhibitions. Check www.caac.es to see what is on.
