The town of Avila is best known for the striking 1.5 mile long and 40 ft high medieval wall that encircles the old part of the town.  The walls are some of the best preserved and beautiful in the world, and contain 90 advanced bastions and towers as well as eight gateways.  Most of the wall dates back to the 11th century.  It is most impressive when you walk out walk outside the city and view it from the Four Posts monument on the Salamanca road, but you can also walk around the wall.   Part of Avila’s cathedral is fortified and is incorporated as part of the wall’s battlements.  It is a worthwhile place to visit as well.

Beware! Avila is one of the coldest places in Spain, making a trip on the wall fairly nippy. The wall has decent views, but be careful on the steep staircase. Definitely hold onto the railing!

Great historical view of the city walls. Lots of souvineers. There's an old filipino movie that was filmed here.

It's fun at night to watch the swallows flying around catching the bugs attracted to the lights on the walls.
