The Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) is in the center of Barcelona and is named for its many buildings from the Gothic era (13th to 15th century). Despite its name, the Romans actually founded it much earlier, and a small portion of the Roman walls that once encircled it can still be seen today.

The Barri Gòtic is a very atmospheric district filled with historic buildings and a chaotic array of dark and narrow cobbled streets. This is an ideal area to discover on foot and wander around for hours. The Cathedral de la Seu is a Gothic cathedral that is the center of the quarter and its leading attraction. Its interior is notable for its carved choir stalls and a 16th century white marble choir screen. There are also many interesting shops and cafes within the quarter, and you can see the ruins of the old Roman town at the Museu d’Hisitoria de la Ciutat.

One of my fondest memories in Barcelona was in the Barri Gotic area. Walking through the cobble stoned streets. And coming across a plaza in front of the Cathedral where a live band was playing and large groups of people were dancing. From young to old. Local to tourist. Just everyone together enjoying a beautiful night.

Barrio Gotico with its narrow streets, wonderful shops and great buildings is a MUST if you are Barcelona. Visit the Church Santa Maria del Mar, it´nicer than the Cathedral ;) Right now there´s a Christmas market in front of the Cathedral, great spot for shopping souvenirs like the famous "Caganers"...;)

If you are interested in old buildings, specially the Gothic era, you´ll have a great day strolling thru the center of Barcelona. There are so many beautiful buildings and spots, you dont know where to look first.
Dont forget to bring your camera and a big bottle of water;-))

This is one of the most interesting places i've been in Barcelona, kind of cliché but amazing to walk either in the morning or at nite, when all the bars are open and bussy! I love the refreshing squares that suddenly appear in between the little streets.
