Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria is it's reall name, but the locals uses simply the shortform La Boqueria.

It is a large market with a huge diversity of gods.
It was first heard of in 1277 when the merchants needed a place to sell their meat. in 1470 it was a market which sold pigs. At that time it was not formally known as a market, but was considered an extension of the Placa Nova , which then extended to the Placa del Pi. Later on, the authorities decided to construct a separate market on La Rambla, housin mainly fishmongers and butchers. Not before the late 18th century was it know as an official market. It was not until 1914 the market got a roof of metal. The roof still exist today.

It is well worth an hour or two. Because you have never seen anything like it before. Ever! it contains all kinds of gods, from fish to bread to fruits to sweet in all kinds of shapes and sizes. and the smells, the sight, the people are magnificent! when you have seen it you understand why so many locals never shop their food anywhere else!

Amazing market. Have fun wandering through the aisles and looking and the lovely displays of food of all kinds. I love trying new foods, so I tried tigernut juice and several kinds of fruit that I had never seen before. It is affordabe and fresh. Well worth a visit, especially since it is just off Las Ramblas, so easy to get to.

Wonderful to wander around in and discover that literally anything from an animal can be used to make food. A good insight into the Spanish cuisine by getting a look at all the great fresh ingredients that are available. Make sure to get some proper Spanish ham from there, for example a great piece of Serrano ham etc.

Un llamativo lugar en pleno corazón de las Ramblas. Merece la pena parar un minuto y disfrutar de los puestos de frutas de casi cualquier color imaginable.
