Situated in the central highlands at an elevation of around 2000 metres, Hortons Plains are a plateau covered by grasslands, cloud forests, lakes and waterfalls.  It is also home to the 2nd and 3rd largest mountains in Sri Lanka - Kirigalpotta (2395m), and Totapola (2359m).  From Hortons Plains you can reach World's End, a region where the escarpment drops straight down 800 metres to the lowlands below.  Along the way back, you pass by the pretty Bakers Falls.  The best time to visit is early in the morning, as most of the time otherwise the region is shrouded in clouds.

Horton Plains is also a key wildlife area, with species including leopard, sambar, langurs, and a number of endemic birds.

A sunny day is very rare here, so don't let that stop you. It's still a great hike and park to visit if overcast or a bit rainy. You may spot birds and sambar (sp?), a large deer here. The Bakers Falls are quite nice too. I kind of liked "mini" World's End better than the bigger "World's End' view...but that's just my preference. I thought it was more photogenic there. You'll have to hike it to judge for yourself!

When it is a sun shiny day, the exotic flora and the mildly balmy climate is addictive.
