The fort was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which even after more than 400 years maintains a polished appearance. It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka.

It's great to see not only the fort but the real life in Sri Lanka just beneath - huge market square in so many different colours! Minus one star for the heat! don't go there at noon.
