It's a red rock, history tells a great story about this rock [2000 years ago] about a prins who became a king after murdering his father. He ruled sri lanka from the top of this 250 high red rock. Was too afraid to come down, build a castle on top of the rock, had over 500 concubines [let some of them painted on the walls]...a bit of shakespeare in Sri Lanka!

Dubbed the "Lion Rock" because near the top are two giant lion paws carved out of the rock. It is said it was an entire lion head at one time. There are lots of stairs to climb here, but it is worth the effort to catch a glimpse of the rock paintings and soak in the majestic view of the surrounding forest and towns from atop the mountain.
