Sri Pada (Adam's Peak)
About Sri Pada (Adam's Peak)
Situated in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, Sri Pada, is a 2,243 metre tall conical mountain that is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists. The goal is to ascend the mountain in the night to reach the top by sunrise. In the night, a distinctive trail is illuminated all the way up to the top. The ascent takes several hours over thousands of steps. At the top is a temple.
The mountain is known by various names, Sri Pada meaning "the sacred foot", thought to be the footprint of St Thomas, an early apostle of India or Lord Shiva. It is known by others to be Adam's Peak as this was thought to be the place Adam stepped foot on earth after being cast out in the heavens. Still others believe the footprint mark is that of Buddha. Regardless of the belief, the views from the top are magnificent. The mountain can only be climbed from December to May, due to heavy rains throughout other times of the year. Sri Pada also produces a very high grade of White Tea, known as Adams Peak White Tea. Payment Accepted:

Feb 5, 2009 This is one challenging trek...or pilgrimage. But since when were pilgrimages easy? I did the touristy thing of arriving for sunrise, and was rewarded with a magically clear morning as the sun rose and burnt off the clouds form the surrounding jungle. The trek is made easier by the frequent tea stops and small rest huts ... you can get a sugar or caffeine fix whenever you need. The route I took was about 9km up and 12km down...took the more scenic route down, through part of the forest. This is a must experience if you're there at the right season. I met probably 1000 or more people that morning and only a dozen foreign tourists, it was a great experience. Be sure to get a guide, they can help provide valuable information on the history of the area, the temple etiquette and ensure you reach the top in time too! Related Links
