Open Air Museum
Skansen is an open-air museum located on the island of Djurgarden in Stockholm.  It was founded in 1891 by Artur Hazelius to show how people from different regions in Sweden lived during the pre-industrial era.  This was an era of change, and many were worried that traditional lifestyles and customs would soon disappear.  Skansen was very successful and became a model for other open-air museums.  It remains the largest open-air museum in the world.

Nearly all of the 150-odd buildings on the 75-acre site are originals that were moved to Skansen from their original locations across Sweden.  They represent a diverse cross-section of Sweden both in time and geography.  You can see anything from a northern Sami Camp to a Swedish Manor, and from a 16th century farmhouse to a small metal factory.   There is a replica of a 19th century town that includes demonstrations (in period dress) of traditional crafts.

Also on site is an open-air zoo (Stockholm’s only zoo) that contains a wide range of Scandinavian animals (and some non-Scandinavian animals as well), and Swedish gardens.

For those who are short of time in Stockholm Skansen is a real surprise. You can visit northern, southern Sweden and the west coast without places in Sweden without travelling more than 15-20 minutes from your hotel ! Skansen is exciting for people of all the ages and varying interests. It's an open-air historical museum and a Zoo where you find domestic and wild life animals re from Scandinavia.

Skansen is especially good when you only take a trip to Stockholm and don't have time to see the rest of Sweden. Skansen gives you a pretty good overview in just one park. You will see historical buildings from all over Sweden with actors in them telling you all about it and also nordic animals such as bears, foxes, owls and of course moose.
