The art museum includes the Gallery and the Department of Prints and Drawings. It houses the world's largest collection of works by the Holbein family.
The city purchases the collection of Basilius Amerbach, a Basel lawyer, in 1661 which formed the core of the museum.

The museum also frequently shows temporary collections. For a list of the current exhibits see their website. Special admission fees are in effect during special exhibitions.

I was lucky enough to have had a seminar in Art History in Basel in 2006. Besides visiting numerous historical buildings we saw as well the Basel Art Museum. It is very very nice if you like old master pieces especially because of the selection of Hohlbein paintings. Don't miss it!
