About Rathaus
The Basel city hall or Rathaus has dominated the Marktplatz square since the 14th century, though the original front was replaced in the 16th century to celebrate joining the Swiss Confederation. It was then enlarged in the 17th century and the tower was added in 1900.
The inner courtyard of the hall is open to the public. Here you can admire the painted walls, various statues and the arcades on the second level surrounding the courtyard. On Tuesdays a free tour is offered which includes a visit to the tower. Payment Accepted:

May 21, 2010 I did a university seminar in Art History in Basel. This place is so remarkable with it's architecture because Switzerland always stayed neutral in wars and so there was never anything destroyed. Therefore you will find houses of all epochs in Basel. Very old houses can be easy over 1000 years! I had to hold a speech about the original city hall of Basel what was built in between 1504 and 1514. Later they build some more parts one in between 1606 and 1608 and the other in between 1898 and 1904. You will find beautiful wall paintings of Hans Bock the Older and inside beautiful interieur. I liked the carvings where the rabbits shoot the hunter - reverse world. That's because once there was a mayor who's name meant rabbit ;) They offer guided tours. May 13, 2010 The city hall facade is very colourful and unique, with a bright red base and various paintings and statues adorning it. The inner courtyard has even more murals and statues. You can walk up to the second level arcades from the courtyard but need to go on the guided tour to see the tower. It is worth a visit just for its uniqueness and it has been sitting in the heart of Basel since the 14th century so it also has historical significance, but if you happen to be there on a Tuesday afternoon take the guided tour and get a better look inside. Jul 13, 2011 impressive from inside, and a really nice view over basel, at best you take a guidance then they explain you all the history about basel, and how it became part of switzerland, it is situated in the city center, easely reachable by public transportation from the airport and from the train station. in front of the Rathaus is a daily market where you can buy nice things often handmade.
