The Rhine river cuts through Basel separating the city center from Kleinbasel, or Little Basel. Along the river's edge on the Kleinbasel side of the Rhine lies the Rhine Shore. You can sit on the large steps lining the river and drink a beer or two (drinks are sold at a small booth nearby or bring your own) while watching people float by in the fast-flowing water and soaking up some sun. You could also stroll down the long promenade along the river's edge.

During the summer months there is a lot of activity along this section of the river. The Basel Tattoo attracts many marching bands to the shore to perform impromptu concerts while passersby enjoy sausages from nearby booths.

At times there is also a stage floating close to the shore where various bands perform.

During Swiss National Day celebrations two barges float in the Rhine, one on either side of the Mittlere Brücke and the riverside promenade is lined with small booths selling food, drinks, and interesting wares.
Anytime of year there are interesting shops, restaurants and cafes just beyond the promenade for visitors and locals to enjoy.

Getting there:

Walk across  Mittlere Brücke from Grossbasel to Kleinbasel (tram stop Schifflande) then walk down the stairs at the end of the bridge leading down to the river promenade. Alternatively take the tram to Rheingasse in Kleinbasel and walk a block to the river's edge.

There are also small cable-pulled boats (see Rheinbord) that take people across the river directly onto the steps of the Rhine Shore.

You can just hang out here in the evening, with a good friend or two, drink a bottle of wine and talk. There are some restaurants and a music float. It's not all beach, there are steps where you can sit at especially near the middle bridge. I prefer the "great basle" side of the river Rhine though.

A really nice place to walk near the Rhine river. On the other side is Germany. Zurzach is connected by a bridge with Germany. There are also remains of an old Roman bridge in the water. On a hill top on the shore are also remains of a Roman fortress. A chapel is still there.

Basel has Switzerland's only cargo port, through which goods pass along the navigable stretches of the Rhine and connect to ocean-going ships at the port of Rotterdam.
