The Rhine Falls are the widest plain waterfalls of Europe, just ahead of the Dettifoss in Iceland, which is two thirds their width - though, worth mentioning: Dettifoss being twice the height and volume of the Rhine Falls, Dettifoss is of course more powerful. The Rhine Falls are located in the High Rhine upper course of the river Rhine, in the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Laufen-Uhwiesen, near the town of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland and close to the German border. They are 150 m (450 ft) wide and 23 m (75 ft) high. In the winter months, the average water flow is 250 m³/s, while in the summer, the average water flow is 700 m³/s. The highest flow ever measured was 1,250 m³/s in 1965; and the lowest, 95 m³/s in 1921.

The Rhine Falls were formed in the last ice age, approximately 14,000 to 17,000 years ago, by erosion- resistant rocks narrowing the riverbed.

The falls cannot by climbed by fish, except by eels that are able to worm their way up over the rocks.

Amaaaazing places, the strenght of the waterfalls is amazing! You'll have to make a walk of around 10 to 15 minutes from the parking lots, but it's worth it, there's boats that take you to the rock right in the middle of the waterfalls, which is an amazing place to admire those. There's different courses on the boats, complete trips and just 1 or 2 ways, depending on your budget, you might choose.

absolutely amazing!
as far as i know one of the most impressive water falls in germany/switzerland.
stunning to see a stream like the rhein litarally blasting over the rocks
i think i should recomend to go in springtime cause it's more exciting with a little bit of extra melt water but it may be fantastic to see it partly frozen in winter as well (?)

This is an unbelievably powerful experience. The video of it on my Bebo page doesn't come close to doing it justice. The lookout comes right to the edge of the falls - you can almost touch them and still be perfectly safe. And there's always a rainbow!

Pretty spectacular. You can take a boat out to the centre rock and climb it, with the falls all around you.

Nice little waterfall like 50 meters from the road. Also in winter when frozen very beautiful.
