Oct 18, 2008 Bellizona is a town in southern Italian-speaking Switzerland. The three castles here are designated UNESCO world heritage sites. The castles are located at varying heights up the side of the mountain. The valley here is a strategic location where the routes to several mountain passes over the Alps converge. We visited the highest castle first, Sasso Corbaro. The smalles of the three, this tower is perched high above the valley giving a great view. The second castle, Montebello was a larger castle, complete with inner keep, crenellated battlements and defensive towers. There was an exhibition here of archaeological remains, old pottery, weapons, etc. Montebello was connected by the city wall to the largest castle, Castelgrande. This main castle is located in the center of town on a huge rocky outcrop. It is reached via an elevator from the main square. Jan 2, 2010 Driving back to Italy we stopped at this beautiful small city. The castle on top looked promising so we went to have a look. The view is nice and the castle in good shape. Not very big though.
