Mt Kassioun rises 1200m above the city of Damascus.  It is believed to be the place where Cain slew his brother Able and also where Mohammad is said to have had to turn away from the beautiful view so as not to be distracted from his quest for heavenly paradise.

Getting there:
The mountain rises steeply to the North West of Damascus city.  There is no public transport to the view points so if you do not have your own vehicle you will need to hire a taxi or driver.  There is little passing traffic so you will need to negotiate with the driver for a return journey.

In summer the summit is a popular place for Damascenes to come and admire their city. Near the peak there are stalls where you can buy drinks and snacks -most popularly nuts and watermelon seeds. This is a great place to come on your first night in Damascus as it gives an impressive overview of the city as it stretches out before you. If you time your arrival for just prior to sunset you will see below you the green lights of the mosques flickering on one by one - almost as many as the stars in the sky. Its a beautiful time of the evening and you will hear the tones of the muezzins calling the faithful to prayer floating up to you on the breeze.
