Kilimanjaro, one of the seven summits of the world, is Africa's highest mountain, standing at 5895 metres (19,340 ft).  Formed from a now-dormant volcano, the mountain actually comprises three peaks, Kibo, the highest and youngest,  Shira, and Mawenzi.  Though Mount Kilimanjaro is located only several degrees off the equator, it still receives snow on the upper slopes, and several permanent glaciers can be found near the summit.  These are however unfortunately rapidly receding.

Kilimanjaro's status as one of the seven summits means that it is a popular destination for climbers.  There are seven sanctioned climbing routes up the mountain, ranging from the Marangu Route, the most popular route (known as the Coca Cola Route due to the availability of amenities such as huts along the way), to some of the lesser known and used routes, such as Rongai, or the more challenging Umbwe.  Most routes take between 5 to 11 days.  Chances of success are higher in climbing the longer routes, as there is a longer period of time for acclimatization, and less of  a chance to experience Acute Mountain Sickness.

The other routes include Machame (the Whisky Route), Londorossi Lemosho, Shira and for descent, the Mweka.

The Western Breach, a route taken by the IMAX team when they filled Kilimanjaro, is currently closed to the public, due to the dangerous Western Breach stretch, for which the route was named.  This section involves a several hour scramble up an unstable wall side with falling rocks.  Other routes involve less scrambling, but do require a midnight ascent.

Kilimanjaro has 5 zones, starting with the forests and moving up to the afroalpine terrain.  Near the summit, the terrain is almost moonlike in appearance.  In the lower zones, it is possible to see herds of elephants and buffalo pass by.

Thruought the Kilimanjaro region, there are some stunning landscapes, especially with the setting sun, when the light turns to gold and even the dust that gets kicked up looks beautiful.
The colours of Massai country really lend in to the amazing scenery, with Kilimanjaro on one side and Mt Meru on another...

For the first few days of our trip, i could barely see the big mountain since there was much cloud cover. Then the day before we were to leave, the clouds suddenly lifted and the sight of Kilimanjaro - right there in front of you- was quite special. Apart from Kilimanjaro, the dominating peak in the region, Mount Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania- at 4,5685m, is a sight which is hard to miss. Its history has been quite explosive. It has had four eruptions, the last of which occurred in 1910.

Various tour operators will offer treks up to the summit. The treks are usually 4 days (hotel to hotel). Besides the stunning views of the landscape, you also can see lots of wildlife en route.

Midnight ascent. You leave the relative warmth of your tent, wearing every possible item of clothing you possess in Kilimanjaro National Park. Its cold, bitterly cold. Two pairs of thermal socks and I still cannot feel my feet. You trek, and maybe its a good thing that you cannot see the peak, or know how far you have left to climb. Keep the focus on your small circle of light radiating from your head torch. Keep the focus on putting one foot in front of the other.
All you can see are small lights making their way up this big black hill. And if you turn around, you see the lights of Moshi, burning brightly as little spots way down in the distance.
At the last hill, as the dawn breaks, i ask Alen, my guide to hold my hand as we climb the last of Stella Point. Not for a pull up, but as guidence, and strength for the last of the climb. Exhausted, i am at Stella Point.
"Turn around, turn around" came Alen's anxious call. I blink, summon the last of my fleeting engery and turn. What i see made the midnight climb all worth every step. The sun is just starting to appear over the edge, and here i am sitting on the rim of Kilimanjaro's crater watching it.
We walked to the sign, had the essential photos to prove, one day, to my disbelieving future children, who will probably think that i am "uncool" and never did anything like climb the highest mountain in Africa.
I also ate my packed of tim tams that i had carried around Africa for two months, saving to celebrate this particular moment.
The climb. Its enjoyable, its tough but incredibly worth it. The scenary is spectacular.

Kilimanjaro is not for the faint hearted and i would recommend that you train for a few months before hand, as advised by your doctor or physiotherapist.
I traveled with Zara, a fantastic local operater. See www.zaratours.com if you want details, and ask for Alen, he is wonderful. I did the 6 day Machame, but i would do it in seven days next time.

great place, great adventure! well worth doing the climb. I reccomend doing the 6 day Machame route climb. gives you an extra day little to aclimatise and has best scenery and success rate! the Breakfast wall was prob best part of climb along with the views here and at the summit. Seeing monkeys in the jungle also brings a smile to your face! Moshi town has the usual guys trying to sell there art work (there all artists!!) if you enjoy hagling this part is for you other wise go to shop Curio for a shop that has prices on things actually priced very reasonable. Ameg lodge had amazing gym and lovely pool with lizards everywhere (not in your lodge though) although food at lodge not that great there is a good Indian 5 mins away. Always agree taxi fare before getting in and also if you need to book for climb try Asante tours who we went with.... Justice was our guide along with thadey and many other who were an unbelievable help. Lake Manyara Safari was great aswell but get there early so its cooler if you want to see more animals! I reccomend at the end of your trip going to dar el salam (near Zanzabar) as you need to stop here on flight journey home anyhow with KLM so you could ahave couple of days on the lovely beach here to finish of your travels.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is one of the most famous attractions in Tanzania . Am also planning to travel to Africa especially Mt. Kilimanjaro . I would like to explore its wildlife sanctuary on safari and other different activities like, trekking, photography, etc. If you are also planning to visit this place then it might be interesting to have a look at the African wildlife visuals here: tanzania-kilimanjaro_national_park-horseback_riding-photography-exploration-active_sport-acacia-sun-adventures-16142-http://www.ekoventure.com/trips/africa-tanzania-kilimanjaro_national_park-horseback_riding-photography-exploration-active_sport-acacia-sun-adventures-16142

Well, I didn´t really went to the Nationalpark. But I went to Moshi, Himo and Kilima, which is a small town at the Kilimanjaro. I stayed there for a week and the landscape is fantastic. Everything is so green and the people are very nice. Go to the market at Himo and try all the different bananas you can get there. It´s amazing how different bananas can taste.
If you are in Moshi wait until 5pm and you´ll get a fantastic view of the Kilimanjaro. It´s amazing, you can bet on it, before 5pm kilimanjao is hidden behind clouds, but after 5pm it´s clear.
And the best thing is Kilimanjaro beer...best beer ever!!!
If you want to go on a trip at the Kilimanjaro, you can book into different tours, there are easy tours which takes about 3 or 4 hours, or you could do the big walk up to the top, which takes about a week.
