This marine park encompases the 9 similan islands along with over 120 square kilometers of surrounding marine area, and is world famous for its teaming marinelife and increadible underwater sightseeing.  Underwater species include the bottlenosed dolphin, several varieties of hard and soft coral, sea anemones, gorgonian sea fans, sponges, crab, spiny painted lobsters, squid, sea cucumbers and giant clams.  The islands themselves are uninhabited and feature high and steep massive granite rock boulders and rock formations rising out of beautiful white-sand beaches.  They harbor a number of land animals including 16 different species of bat, 3 species of squirrels, 4 rat species, porcupine, common palm civet, flying lemur, and 22 species of reptiles and amphibians.  Visitors can also see a species of land-walking crab knowns as the hairy leg mountain land crab.

The park's visitor center and park headquarters are located on Ko Miang.  Basic bungalows are available and camping is usually allowed on this island.  Both need to be booked through the park's mailand office in Thap Lamu.

Getting there:
These islands are Thailand's westernmost point on the globe.   They are located about 35 kilometers off the coast from Thap Lamu.  Boat heading for the island depart from Thap Lamu, which is just north of Thai Muang.  Dive tours operating out of and Hat Khao Lak in the Phang-Nga province, as well as Patong and Phuket city on the island of Phuket will take visitors to the islands as well.

If you enjoy diving, try a liveaboard in the Similans. There are many great boats in all price categories, and the diving is excellent. Good chance of Manta's and whale sharks (unfortunately just missed the mantas while doing my PADI course there...:)

Probably some of the best diving I've done.. gorgeous clear water. It's a good idea to do a multi-day liveaboard trip here.
