This small neighborhood made up of only asmall number of families is the only remaining village established by King Rama I to produce the bowls used by monks in the collection of food alms.  While the the vast majority of monks in Thailand now use bowls that are mass-produced in China, this small village continues to produce its bowls using traditional techniques.  This method involves hammering sheets of 8 different metals togetherand is supposed to represent the 8 spokes of the Wheel of Dharma and Buddhism's Eightfold path.  Copper is used to weld the metal together, and the bowl is finished by covering it in several coats of black lacquer.  The bowls can be bought for 600 Baht, and the craftsmen will take you through the process of making them if you by one.

Getting there:
This small village is located in east end of the Banglamphu district along Soi Ban Baht Road off of Thanon Bamrung Meuang.  The 508 bus line stops nearby, and the Klong cannal river taxi stops at the Tha Pan Fah pier that is within walking distance of the village.

This is a really small area, but really cool to see.  I had a guy grab me and run me through the alleyways to show me all of the different steps that go into making the bowls.  It is quite a process! Don't be fooled into thinking you have seen the whole area by the person who has set up shop on the corner outside the alleyways, keep going...it is well worth it!!
