Bangkok’s lively chinatown has been the main trading center for the Chinese since the moved from their old site over 200 years ago.  This neighborhood covers a large area in and around Yaowarat Road and Charoen Krung Road.  This includes a myriad of small streets and alleys filled with shops selling just about every type of good you can imagine.  Travelers are guaranteed to be amazed at the selection of innexpensive household goods that can be found in the area.

A number of wats and other attractions are situated within the chinatown neighborhood, and the Phahurat Market, a renown cloth centre in Bangkok, is located nearby.

Getting there:
The easiest way to reach Chinatown is by river taxi.  Get off at the Ratchawong Rier, the Harbor Department Pier or the Memorial Bridge Pier.

If you don't do anything else in all of Bangkok, visit Chinatown. Enjoy perusing the market stalls selling anything and everything from balloons to traditional Chinese medicine. Buy your very own whole roast duck and have the vendor chop it up with his cleaver for you before you head off. Tour through Chinese pharmacies, temples and gold shops. The atmosphere and array of sights, smells sounds are amazing. Just don't get run over by a delivery motorbike while walking between the vendors' stalls!

Coming from a city with a large Chinatown, I wanted to see this one. It was chaos and I loved it! I love getting lost in a city and then finding my way back. Went by water taxi and wandered around the stored that sold everything. Had lunch from a street vendor. Bought a few small things but there wasn't much that caught my fancy (or that I could easily bring back). I spent a happy afternoon there walking around. I'm sure that pick-pocking could be a problem, so hang on to your valuables and you should be fine.

This area is really crazy - its basically a labyrinth of narrow passageways with shops everywhere. I found this one shop that specializes in sew-on badges for all sorts of professionals including police, postal service, army, firemen, and more, as well as the oddest truck brands. Occasionally I would come across a Coca-Cola badge, or a karate badge, but the craziest thing was that this store was overflowing with them.

Chinatown is my favorite area in all of Bangkok. I love the streets, the markets, the food, and the people. This is a place to be a tourist without being hassled or touted (for the most part). Plus, it is close enough to walk to the train station and the river ferries. Good journeys!
