Jim Thompson was an American architect turned officer of the OSS (predecessor of the CIA). After moving to Thailand, the joined the silk business and is credited with revitalizing Thailand's silk industry. The house he left behind is also a national treasure. Thompson imported parts of several country buildings, some as old as 150 years, to construct his compound of six Thai houses, and then furnished them with now priceless pieces of Southeast Asian art.

Pretty amazing place to visit; he collected and saved art and then it was turned over to the government to be preserved as a museum. He was a heck of a collector, and managed to gather rare and diverse items from all over Thailand. HOWEVER, beware guides calling things "traditional Thai" that only belonged to the very richest of people in the country. That is by definition not traditional. Actually the guides seem to no very little about the place, though they will talk at length about the toilets... but it's well worth a visit. Bring Off if you can, the gardens are lush and dark.

This place was amazing! Jim Thompson's life was so interesting and then to go and see where he lived was just incredible. The wood and all of it's detail is really so beautiful and ornate. If you've already seen the Grand Palace and Wat Pho and are interested in architecture and want to see something different then I definitely recommed this sight.
