Wat Pho, also known as The Temple of the Reclining Buddha is Bangkok's largest and oldest Buddhist Temple.  The large grounds of Wat Pho contain a number of chambers carrying more than 1000 Buddha images in total.  Most originate from the ruins of the former capitals Ayuthaya and Sukhothai.  The largest chamber houses an enormous gold plated reclining Buddha measuring an impressive 46 meters long and 15 meters high.  This statue was designed to illustrate the passing of the Buddha into nirvana.  The Buddha's feet and the eyes are engraved with mother-of-pearl, and the feet also depict the 108 auspicious characteristics of the true Buddha.

Wat Pho is also a center for the study of traditional Thai Massage, and it is considered one of the best places to receive one.  Travelers should be aware that this kind of massage is not particularly gentle.  Massage courses are also available for those wishing to learn the art.

Wat Pho is certainly one to see. Until you actually see the reclining Buddha, you won't believe it. It's absolutely massive! But on top of that, and probably one of the main reasons that I visited this temple, is the Thai massage you can get there. It's apparently the second best massage that you will get in Thailand. I didn't try the so-called "best place" so I don't know whether this is true, but I certainly enjoyed the massage that I received at Wat Pho. There are two locations where you can receive the Wat Pho massage. One is on the grounds of the Temple, there are generally enormous queues for it so it is best to get there early. Also there is no air con, so this might prove to be uncomfortable. The second spot is a few blocks away, there are directions at the first spot. I would argue that this second location is better because it is not normally as busy and they have air con too. While the massage at Wat Pho is a bit more expensive than elsewhere in Thailand, it's incredibly worth it because you know that you are guaranteed to receive a top class massage.

Wat Po is my favorite temple in Bangkok. Besides is beauty of the numerous temples and statues and the Reclining Buddha it is so much more. It is the birthplace of the original Thai massage and you can get one of these massages over there. If you are really interested in you even can learn basic Thai massage, Thai oil massage with aroma therapy, foot massage and different other styles in the Wat Po massage institute. I did and loved it! One day I just relaxed and meditated a monk came changing the clothes of the Buddha (there three different seasons and therefore the Buddha wear three different clothes). After communicating more with body language and smiles than words (he didn't understand English that well) he offered me to follow him and help him changing the clothes of some Wat Po Buddha... This was one of the nicest experiences I ever had that I was honored to do so... I will never forget this situation...

Amazing and beautiful... I spent a nice afternoon at Wat Pho after arriving by water taxi. The line for admission was long, but well-worth it. I was delighted to find that the wat was also being visited by a very large group of uniformed, well-behaved, curious, school children. There faces and antics kept me smiling as I made my way around the grounds and through the numerous chambers. The reclining Buddha was indeed impressive as were the numerous other Buddha depictions. I exposed so many photographs here, that I filled my memory card! Good Journeys!
