Kanchanaburi Allied War Cemetery
About Kanchanaburi Allied War Cemetery
The larger of two World War II Memorial cemeteries, Kanchanaburi Allied War Cemetery is situated within walking distance of the train station. The grounds contain the graves of 7,000 predominantly British and Australian Prisoners, and was built by the British Commonwealth's Army Graves Service to serve as a final resting place for the allied prisoners of war that died while building the Siam-Burma Death Railway. As they perished, workers would be buried in camp burial grounds and isolated sites along the railway. Virtually all such graves (except for the Americans, whose remains were repatriated) were transferred to one of three cemeteries - one in Thanbyuzayat (Myanmar), one in Chungkai (Thailand), and one in Kanchanaburi (Thailand). The Kanchanaburi cemetery received all the graves along the southern section of the railway from Bangkok to Nieke.
