These old Khmer-style temple ruins have been completely overrun by a troupe of Crab-eating Macaque monkeys whose tree-climbing skills have made these ruins the perfect hangout place for them.  While the monkeys can be found pretty much everywhere in Lopburi's town center, this temple allows visitors to get up front and personal with them.  All of the temple's opening save one have been fitted with metal bars, protecting those inside from getting bitten, having their hair pulled or having their camera stolen, etc (for once it's the humans that are behind the bars with the animals outside roaming free).  While the temple ruins themselves are very beautiful, it is the pecking order and overall behavior of this monkey troupe that is incredible to watch.  In late November, the entire town holds a feast here in honor of the monkeys, where buffet tables are loaded with peanuts, cucumbers, boiled eggs, bananas, pumpkins, pineapples, and other fruits for the monkeys to eat and fight over.  This wat is very popular with Thai tourists, and the monkey feast attractions thousands of tourists every year.

Visitors should be very weary of the monkeys, keep their distance and avoid aggravating them, as monkey attacks have occurred in the past.

The monkeys here are absolutely insane. I spent the better part of a day watching them fight amongst themselves, get my food stollen, and even get rushed by a gang of them. At one point a medium-sized macaque jumped onto the back of young Thai tourist and started pulling out chunks of here hair to eat (got no idea why). She was screaming so I went to shooe him offer her. Before I know it there 4 monkeys approaching at me. My mistake was to back away - this encouraged them to charge me! The good friend I was traveling with yelled at me to stop backing up. I stopped and so did the monkeys on a 2 feet away from me. They were looking at each other like they were trying to figure out if who wanted to slap me most. The intense 1-2 minute staring showdown ended with them backing away, but for a minute there I thought I would be spending the next week in a Thai hospital getting rabbie shots in the stomach. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip.

The ruins are interesting, but definitely upstaged by the monkeys that live there. Their antics were captivating and it was evident that they were very accoustomed to the presence of humans among them. Can you define a monkey's actions as impolite? I think not, but nevertheless these creatures were naughty. My son had a great time interacting with the beasts, and I certainly had a few good laughs. Good Journeys!

very cool all the monkey`s running around the ruins and the city, but be careful because they are very curious. the monkey`s running on the streets and sometimes they try to get in stores, but there are people that shoot catapults to scare the monkey`s,but they don`t hurt them

The temple was crawling with these cute little monkeys. It was like 'planet of the apes', only cooler, with ancient Khmer ruins to set it off. I loved watching how they groomed and cared for each other.
