Ko Chang , die Elefanteninsel (abgeleitet von der Form der Insel) (Thai: เกาะช้าง ) ist eine Insel im Golf von Thailand an der Ostküste Thailands nahe der Grenze zu Kambodscha . Sie ist nach Phuket mit 492 km² die zweitgrößte Insel Thailands. Die Insel ist Teil des Meeresnationalparks Mu Ko Chang und besteht zu 70 % aus noch ungestörtem und zusammenhängenden Tropenwald; einer der am besten erhaltenen in Thailand, wenn nicht in ganz Südostasien . Der Tourismus ist stark zunehmend, liegt aber weit hinter den Zahlen von Phuket oder Ko Samui. Ko Chang erhält pro Jahr circa 500.000 Besucher, die meisten sind Thais, die nur über das Wochenende oder zu bestimmten Feiertagen die Insel besuchen. Nicht-Thai-Besucher bleiben im Durchschnitt lediglich 5 Tage auf der Insel. Gemäß thailändischen Plänen soll allerdings in den nächsten Jahren der Tourismus noch weiter ausgebaut werden. Viele bestehende Resorts werden abgerissen, um luxuriösere Unterkünfte für Touristen zu schaffen. Man strebt eine weitere Erhöhung der Besucherzahlen an. Zu erreichen ist Ko Chang per Flugzeug über den Flugplatz der Provinzhauptstadt Trat, der regelmäßig von Bangkok Airways von Bangkok aus bedient wird. Mehrere Fähren - auch Autofähren - verbinden die Insel tagsüber mit dem Festland.


Ko Chang, the elephant's island (derived by the form of the island) (Thai: เกาะช้าง) is an island in the gulf of Thailand on the east coast of Thailand near the border to Cambodia. She is to Phuket with 492 km ² the second largest island of Thailand. The island is a part of the sea national park Mu Ko Chang and exists to 70% of still undisturbed and coherent tropical wood; one best of all preserved in Thailand, if not in completely South-East Asia. The tourism is very increasing, however, lies far behind the figures of Phuket or Ko Samui. Ko Chang receives approximately 500,000 visitors per year, most are Thais which visit the island only about the week-end or to certain holidays. Non-Thai visitors remain on average only 5 days on the island. However, according to Thai plans the tourism should be developed during the next years even further. Many existing Resorts are torn off to create more luxurious lodgings for tourists. One aims at an other rise of the visitor's figures. Ko Chang is to be reached by airplane above the airfield of the provincial centre Kicking which is served regularly by Bangkok airways from Bangkok. Several ferries - also autoferries - connect the island during the day with the mainland.
