Phimai Historical Park
About Phimai Historical Park
The Prasat Hin Phimai ruins date back to the 12th Century when the Khmer kingdom was at its height, expanding well into modern-day Thailand's north-eastern Isan region. As such, this temple is similar in size and layout to the temple in Angkor Wat, though its central sanctuary is built upon a platform only a few steps high. The temple’s central Sandstone tower stands approximately 28 meter tall. Since the Khmer practiced a form of Hinduism, this temple is a bit different from Thailand's other temple, and includes some stone-carved reliefs believed to be a depiction of the Ramayana. The ruins overall are in very good condition and the temple grounds are very well kept.
While the ruins can be easily toured on foot, it is recommended that travelers visit the ruins by bicycle to get around quicker. Payment Accepted:

Jun 28, 2008 The Phimai historical park protects one of the most important Khmer temples of Thailand. Most buildings are from the late 11th to the late 12th century, built in the Baphuon, Bayon and Angkor Wat style. However, even though the Khmer at that time were Hindu, the temple was built as a Buddhist temple, as Buddhism in the Khorat area dated back to the 7th century.
