Khao Yai national Park is the second largest park in all of Thailand, covering over 2000 square kilometers of evergreen forest, grasslands and steep hilly terrain.  The park has several waterfalls, the most impressive being the 80 metre tall Heo Narok waterfall.  Khao Yai is home to numerous species of plants, birds, and mammals including Asian elephants, gibbons, Asian black bears, sambar dear, and even tigers.  The is also an excellent place to see Thailand’s great hornbill – an enormous bird whose wingspan can reach over 2.5 meters wide, and whose wings are featherless on the underside.  Visitors can explore the park through over 50 kilometers of trails.

Getting there:
The park is most easily accessed from the the small town of Pak Chong located 37 km north of it in the Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Access is provided via HWY 2 (the Friendship Highway). Songthaew buses run regularly between the town and main park entrance every half hour from 6:30AM to 5:00 PM (the last bus leaves Khao Yai at 5:30PM).

I spent a few days in this park and really had a great time. We saw great hornbills and snuck up on wild elephants - we got within a few meters of one before it stormed off. The waterfall here falls into a large basin that is great to swim in and cool off. The real highlight for me though was this incredible hollow tree with branches and roots sticking out everywhere. I spent at least a full hour climbing this thing and would have gladly spent another two if I wasn't in a group with non-tree-aficionados that were itching to move along.

This park was beautiful and full of wildlife. I saw three elephants (two baby elephants) and lots of beautiful birds. It had some fantastic waterfalls and of course we had to go swimming. My son and I hiked all day and had a great time. The trails are outstanding. We really could have spent a week or more there. It was well worth the effort to get there. Good journeys!
