Description:
Chiang Mai's night market is one of the most famous in all of Thailand.  The market is centered around a 3-story building and sprawls along the entire Chang Klan Road.   Street stalls sell everything from fine Thai silks, silverware, antiques and wood-carvings to CDs, videos and watches.  Many merchants carry imitation brand products, from clothing to perfume.  There are plenty of food vendors keeping shoppers well-fed and refreshed.  As with virtually all Thai markets, bargaining is expected.

This is the biggest market, it is massive, so big it is almost overwhelming. There are incredible deals on silk clothing, local handmade products, you can pick up just about anything here. It is definitely one of the cheapest places in Thailand to shop in Thailand. There are lots of little local eateries in the area so that you can take a break to eat some local fare when the shopping and barganing wears you out. Go early if your serious about shopping. Be sure to bargan as many vendors are selling the same items so if the price isn't right you can just go on to the next stand. I picked up some beautiful silk blouses that are one of a kind -- should have picked up more but ran out of time.

This night market is a fun place to spend an evening, but travelers shouldn't buy anything here until they have shopped around a bit, acquire some bargaining experience specifically in Thailand and gotten a basic sense of what things cost in this economy. I've seen prices here hyped up to 10-20 times the prices found elsewhere. To give you an idea, I saw some Thai silks where the asking price of 8000 Baht. I ended up acquiring 3 silks for 350-400 Baht a piece. (Later in my travels, I learned that store owners in Chiang Mai would acquire their silks wholesale for roughly 200 Baht a piece, so even the 350-400 Baht I negotiated down to turned out to be pretty generous.)

This is a great night market. It is easy to find (inside the walled part of the city). You can find just about anything that you want to buy in there including scarves, Coach purses, silk neckties, food, antiques, etc. Be sure to bargain or you will end up paying more than that item is really worth. It is fun way to spend an evening.

Night market on pakko käydä katsomassa. Koko keskusta täynnä pienia kojuja missä myydään käsintehtyjä vaatteita, koruja, laukkuja, lippaita, huiveja, kenkiä. Täältä löydät kaikenlaista kivaa pientä ja mikset suurtakin. Ja Thaimaalaista ruokaa basaari tyyliin. Halpaa ja hyvää. Hikistä mutta antoisaa puuhaa. ;)
