What's There:
Description:
This temple was built 3,520 feet above sea level halfway up Doi Suthep, a small mountain to the west of Chiang Mai. Overlooking a steep slope, its balconies offer an impressive view of Chiang Mai and its surrounding area. Its entrance is a steep 300-step-long naga stairway adorned with giant dragon statues. The temple itself is one of the most important remaining examples of lanna-style architecture, and its main structure, a giant golden chedi, supposedly houses relics of the Buddha. A great variety of bells can be found just about everywhere in the outside areas of the temple grounds.
A tram was built to for visitors wishing to avoid the naga stairway (using it both ways costs 20 Baht).

Getting there:
The temple is located 15 km to the west of Chiang Mai along the road that is the continuation of Huay Keaw Road in Chiang Mai. There is no shortage of taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and songthaew ready to transport visitors between Chiang Mai and the temple.

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is a Buddhist temple, located 15 km from the Chiang Mai and is a sacred site to many Thai people. From the temple impressive views of Chiang Mai can be seen and it remains a popular destination of foreign visitors. The temple is said to be founded in 1383 when the first chedi was built. Over time the temple has expanded, and been made to look more extravagant with many more holy shrines added. A road to the temple was first built in 1935.

This was definitely one of my favorite temples in Thailand. There's a lot of marble and stone work which was great to see after so many other gaudy wats with gold everywhere. My favorite things was the marble balcony on the edge of a fairly steep drop overlooking Chiang Mai. I spent a good half hour appreciating this spot.

Nice mountain top temple with great views of the entire city. Good workout climbing up the stairs to get to the top of the temple.

As all major cities Chiang Mai has a lot of 'wats'...; Doi Suthep is one of them but I can recommend to visit this one !
