Oct 23, 2011 Off the beaten track but all the more reason to try and make the effort to get there and visit. I visited during the peak season and even then it was pretty much deserted. Not on the scale of Ayyuthaya but the heritage site is completely self-contained beyond the town limits and enveloped by a woodland setting, so you feel you've gone back in time unlike in Ayyuthaya where the temples are just dotted around the modern town and thereby losing out on the charm and ambience of Sukhothai. Hiring a bike and spending a lazy day just cycling around is a great experience. I took a Bangkok Airways flight from Bangkok first thing in the morning and then flew out the next day, continuing north to Chang Mai. If you can afford the flights, taking a day out to see this place is a must-do, especially if you are going northward anyway to Chang Mai. Sep 17, 2008 Sukhothai´s temple ruins are very cool, the best is to rent a bike and spend the hole day discovering them. It´s so worth it!
