The amphitheatre of El Jem (El Djem) sticks out in the middle of El Jem in the Tunisian plains as a massive structure without any neighboring ruins.   Built in the 3rd century in the town of Thysdrus, the amphitheatre is the largest Roman monument in Africa.  It could house up to 35,000 spectators (around the whole population of Thysdrus!) and measured 122m by 148m in an elliptical shape, while rising to 36m high.  It was the 3rd largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire and was used for gladiatorial games and chariot races as well as a water storage facility.

The amphitheatre was badly damaged in the 17th century as its stones were used to help build the village of El Jem, and it was damaged in conflicts between the Ottomans and rebels.  It was in danger of tumbling down, but has since been heavily restored and is in excellent condition.

El Jem is in surprisingly good condition all things considered . You have to pay to take your camera in but it is worth it. You do not ge too much hassle here . The place is full of atmosphere.......was very surprised. Was told that it was used as setting for gladiator??

A traditional Roman coliseum very well preserved and definitely not as busy as the one in Rome! You can leisurely explore this sight and snap some great photos.

Built when the roman empire extended into africa, film makers used it's sturcture as a basis for the buliding of the set for gladiator.
