The Bardo Museum is most notable for its world-class mosaic collection that fills its 50 halls and galleries. These mosaics come from ancient Tunisian sites such as Carthage and Dougga and are perhaps the finest collection in the world. The mosaics include mosaics from the Early Christian (4th-7th century) period, the Punic Era, and the Roman Era. Highlights include the 2nd century God Neptune and the Four Seasons mosaic, and the 3rd century mosaic of the poet Virgil. The former is considered a masterpiece of artistry and is in excellent condition. The latter is similarly in good shape and is the only known surviving portrait of Virgil.

Although the mosaics are the undoubted highlight of the Bardo Museum, there are also a number of excellent busts and statues.

The Museum used to be the Palace of the Husseinties Beys.
The collection of Roman mosaics there is considered to be the best in the world (2nd 4th C AD).There are also statues from Punic (Berbers Phoenicians) times.

If you are in Tunis, definitely check out the Bardo Museum. Lots of great artifacts and mosaics to view.

For a great photo opportunity, go outside and find the building blue door on the adjacent building.

Awesome, to see the workmanship of these mosaics...absolutely fantastic... knowing the tools they and to work with, they have withstood the test of time... amazing
